Did You Know?

How many toes do you think guinea pigs have? 20? 16? Would you believe 14? They have 4 toes on each front paw and 3 toes on each back paw. A little uneven, but at least they're unique.

NEW GUINEA PIG!!!!!

I'm am very happy to announce that with the edition of the bigger and better cage (that is more than enough room for 5 Guineas), I decided to get another Guinea Friend. I like to introduce to you...

PHIDIAS!!!

Phidias is a baby Tan & White Abyssinian. I would guess he is only about 3 weeks old judging by his size. And he has even more cowlicks than Alvin! His colors also blend together in a very unique and beautiful way. And his ears and and some of his feet are darker than the rest of him. His colors look like some tan paint was poured into some white paint and left to dry without being mixed or blended together. He's like a work of art and he is named after an Ancient Greek Sculptor and Painter.

As you can see I gave him a bath as soon as I brought him home. The conditions he was in before was horrible! The bottom of him was wet and stained. He didn't have a shelter before so he hid underneath his water bottle, which dripped. He also had Cedar Chips for bedding, which is not healthy for small pets. They breathe in the dust which causes respiratory problems.

He seems like he has a very outgoing personality. He was more curious than scared when I was taking him home. He purred when we petted him. And he took very well to Rascal. They seem like they'll be best friends!

Here's a video of Rascal & Phidias playing. When Phidias jumps in the air, he's popcorning. Guinea Pigs do that when they are happy =)

C&C cages

Did you know that no cage you buy at a pet store has the adequate space for a guinea pig? One guinea pig needs the very minimum of 7.5 square feet to run around. Okay, maybe you can find a cage this size. But will there still be room for him/her to run around with a litter box, a shelter, food, hay feeder, and various toys and chewing logs that are required for the guinea pigs? And who would have just one guinea pig? They get depressed if they have to live in solitude. Two guinea pigs need about 10.5 square feet of empty space to run in. Add the very minimum of 2 square feet per guinea pig from there.

Thankfully there is a simple solution: build your own. Trust me, it's not nearly as hard as it sounds. And it actually cost less than a store bought cage. You can buy a wire grid from walmart in the hardware section. (it'll have a picture of a wire grid shelf on the box though. It's not sold for guinea pig cages, but is perfectly safe and recommended) You won't have enough connecters, but zip ties do a better job anyway. Then buy a sheet of coroplast from the nearest sign shop... I'm not about to explain everything... so here's a very good website with more info: http://guineapigcages.com/howto.htm

Any way, this is called a C&C (cubes&coroplast) cage. It's a nice project. And you can even go farther and make mini couches like I am in the process of doing. Rascal & Alvin will be much happier with a cage that I can fit in with them.
